Both checks answer what this page shows. They do not reopen the 09:00 program, and they do not write a policy.

Learning outcomes
After this chapter, you should be able to:
- Read a named synthetic 11:40 page that includes
SYN-002as evidence that Room 2 at 15:00 is already booked. - Keep that reading inside this exercise: leave the Chapter 4 tally untouched, and do not turn the page into a rule for later outages.
- Refuse a person's name and refuse a live-site check when the page itself has answered the slot.
11.1 What the named page can decide
Chapter 10 stopped while the 11:40 page was only talk. This lesson changes the table. The exercise owner places one synthetic page in front of you and says that this page is the approved current source for this exercise. The heading on the page is 11:40. The rows are:
| Booking | Room | Start | Created | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
SYN-001 |
Room 2 | 14:00 | 08:20 | confirmed |
SYN-002 |
Room 2 | 15:00 | 10:05 | confirmed |
You record two observations from the page, not from memory. The heading clock is 11:40. SYN-002 is a printed row, with Room 2, start 15:00, created 10:05, and status confirmed. Both observations succeed. The owner's sentence and those two observations are the whole authority for this sitting.
The decision those facts support is narrow. A resident who asks for Room 2 at 15:00 is asking for a slot that this page already lists as a confirmed booking. Staff say the slot is taken. The page has booking identifiers and no personal names, so the spoken answer does not add one. SYN-002 identifies the synthetic row. It is not a person, and announcing the identifier is unnecessary for the resident's question.
SYN-001 is a different start time. A booked 14:00 slot does not, by itself, decide 15:00. The 15:00 answer comes from the SYN-002 row. Mixing the two rows would invent a conflict, or a free hour, that the page does not state.
11.2 Worked example
The 09:00 printout and this page are different artifacts, so their labels do not cancel. Chapter 4 refused a confirmation that used the 09:00 printout, because that printout has no SYN-002 row. This page does have the row. The correct speech from this page is still not "the room is free." It is "the slot is taken." Erasing REFUSE would pretend the earlier program had read this page. It had not. Nobody reruns that program, and nobody types 11:40 into it. The published census remains the census of that older log.
| Classmate's next step | What this page actually settles | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "Both checks passed, so call Room 2 at 15:00 free." | SYN-002 is a confirmed 15:00 booking |
Refuse. Say the slot is taken |
| "Clear REFUSE on the Chapter 4 tally." | The tally labels the 09:00 run | Leave the printed line unchanged |
| "Treat 11:40 as the fallback for every outage this month." | The owner named one page, once | Refuse the standing rule |
| "Open the live site and see whether production matches." | The exercise supplied a paper page | Stop. The site stays closed |
| "Tell the resident who holds 15:00." | No name is printed | Refuse the name |
The notebook line that matches the page is: Room 2 at 15:00 is already booked on the named 11:40 page; no name is given; the Chapter 4 census stays as printed; the page expires with this exercise.
11.3 What one page cannot settle
A single synthetic page cannot show how often a real desk reprints a fallback schedule. It cannot explain why the booking view was unavailable. It cannot authorize a search of a live system. The owner's sentence should be copied into the notebook with its limit attached: named for this exercise, not adopted as the library's outage procedure. When the sitting ends, the next outage is pending again until its own source is named and checked.
The Chapter 4 ALLOW line is also the wrong tool here. That label belonged to Room 4 at 15:00, a slot with no later row on the 09:00 printout. Room 2 at 15:00 now has a row on a different page. Reusing ALLOW's wording would report a free room that this page contradicts.
Chapter 11 summary
When the owner names this 11:40 page and both observations pass, Room 2 at 15:00 is taken. That answer does not clear the older tally, does not identify a person, and does not become the rule for the next outage.
Chapter 11 exercises
EX027 — Take the leap off the page
- Objective: Use a named 11:40 page without turning a booked slot into a free room or a monthly rule.
- Input: A classmate writes, "Both gates passed, so the room is free, clear REFUSE, and use 11:40 for every outage this month."
- Safe condition: Paper only. Leave the Chapter 4 program closed, and leave any live booking site closed.
- Task: Write four sentences: what
SYN-002shows about Room 2 at 15:00, why "free" reverses that row, why the Chapter 4 line stays, and why 11:40 does not govern the next outage. - Expected evidence: Four sentences a reader can check against the page in Section 11.1 and against the published Chapter 4 tally.
- Rubric: Credit when the slot stays booked, the tally is left as printed, the monthly rule is refused, and no person's name and no live site appear. A new program run does not earn credit.
