Logical drawing
outage
appointment sheet: this day's visits, already in the office
locked list: the urgent-call extract, possibly still the drill page
|
+-- a name on today's sheet is not an urgent-call duty
+-- absence from the locked list is not "no appointment"
+-- treatment entry, when the system returns, stays with Chapter 6
Learning outcomes
After this chapter, you should be able to:
- Use today's appointment sheet for who is expected in the building.
- Keep the locked client list on the urgent-call question, under the limits already taught.
- Refuse to swap the two papers.
18.1 The outage does not merge the papers
When the practice system is treated as down, reception already has a paper appointment sheet for the day. Separately, a client list sits locked away for urgent calls, and Chapters 5 and 10 limit when that list may be treated as current. A busy morning invites a shortcut: phone everyone on today's sheet, because those pages are in the hand, or tell a caller they have no booking because the locked list lacks the name. The sheet answers who was expected today. It is not the urgent-call population. The locked list is not the appointment book, even on a morning when it happens to be fresh.
Treatments written while the system is down are still entered from that outage paper when the system returns. This chapter does not perform the entry.
18.2 Worked example
Lesson table; scroll horizontally to read all columns →
| Question at the desk | Paper someone reaches for | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "Is this animal booked this morning?" | Locked urgent list | Wrong paper. Use today's appointment sheet |
| "Phone the urgent clients." | Every name on today's sheet | Wrong population. The sheet is today's visits |
| "The locked list has no such client, so cancel them." | An extract that may be stale | Do not cancel from that absence |
| "Enter the injection the nurse remembers." | Memory | Still the outage paper's job, in Chapter 6 |
Synthetic case. No animal name is required to choose the paper.
Errors and limits
Choosing the right paper does not refresh a stale list and does not restore the mailbox. If today's sheet itself is missing, staff do not promote the locked list into an appointment book. They say they cannot answer the booking from the papers they hold.
Apply
- EX072 — Which paper answers? The practice system is down. A caller asks whether they are booked this morning. A colleague reaches for the locked client list and, finding no match, wants to say there is no appointment. Which paper answers the booking, and what absence must you refuse to treat as a cancellation?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = today's appointment sheet answers the booking; absence from the locked list is not a cancellation; the locked list remains the urgent-call paper under its existing limits;; 2 = name the sheet and reject the cancellation;; 1 = one of those;; 0 = none.
