F --> S["The month note says updates are back on"]
S --> N{"Does the log list a patch check of all nine?"}

N -->|Yes| K["Cite that check, machine by machine"]
The repair covered the machines that had been switched off.
Logical drawing
nine computers
three had updates off after a label-printer failure
driver replaced, those three switched on
six others were not in that note
|
+-- "updates back on" means those three
+-- it is not a patch-level reading of nine machines
+-- missing rows are not proof the six are exposed
Learning outcomes
After this chapter, you should be able to:
- Read "updates back on" as the three computers that had been switched off.
- Refuse a sentence that all nine computers are fully patched when no such check was written.
- Avoid treating the missing six rows as evidence that those machines are exposed.
12.1 The month note has a smaller subject
Chapter 2 records a narrow repair. An old label printer had broken after an update, so three computers had updates switched off. The technician installed a newer driver and switched updates on again. The month's list then says updates are back on. A classmate expands that phrase to "all nine computers are fully patched." The log never recorded a patch level, a date, or a pass for the other six. Expansion invents a census.
The opposite error is also refused. Absence of six rows does not show that those machines missed updates. They may have been receiving them the whole time. The honest sentence is the one the technician's work supports: the three that were off are on again. A nine-row check, if Sofia later wants one, is a new measurement with its own lines.
12.2 Worked example
Lesson table; scroll horizontally to read all columns →
| Sentence offered for the log | What was done | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "Updates are back on for the three that were off." | Driver installed, those three switched on | Accept |
| "All nine computers are fully patched." | No nine-row check | Refuse |
| "The other six must be dangerously behind." | They were outside the printer note | Do not infer exposure |
| "Skip the three because the month summary already sounds complete." | The summary is only as wide as the repair | Keep the three-machine wording |
Synthetic case. No new patch report is written by this lesson.
Errors and limits
Switching updates on is not the same control as the tablets' passcode and remote wipe. This chapter does not choose a wipe, and it does not name which three computers.
Apply
- EX066 — How wide is the sentence? The change log says the three computers that had updates off now have them on, after the newer driver. A colleague writes "patch census: all nine computers fully patched." What is wrong with the width, and what do you refuse to infer about the other six?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = the repair covers three machines; nine were not checked; do not call the six exposed merely because they lack rows;; 2 = reject the nine-machine census;; 1 = a vague doubt;; 0 = none.
