A finished deletion has a scope. The stick is outside it.
Logical drawing
map already used
paper sheet, newsletter service, till provider
staff messaging, invoice folder, allergy folder
laptop spreadsheet: checked, then deleted
a drawer
USB stick, not listed

+-- unknown contents are not assumed to be event photos

+-- wiping is not this lesson's act
Learning outcomes
After this chapter, you should be able to:
- Keep the laptop-spreadsheet deletion finished for that file alone.
- Add a newly found stick to the map as unchecked.
- Refuse to wipe the stick before anyone has looked under the rules.
18.1 The map is a list of places, and this place was missing
The forgotten spreadsheet of customer emails lived on the café laptop. It was checked, it held nothing the café still needed, and it was deleted. That sentence is closed for that file. A USB stick then turns up in a drawer. The map Kwame drew named the paper sheet, the newsletter service, the till provider, the staff messaging group, the shared invoice folder and the locked allergy folder, plus the laptop he had already checked. The stick is none of those. A classmate says the deletion "covers loose copies," or that the stick is probably event photos and should be wiped. Unknown contents are not photos, and they are not the spreadsheet. Kwame adds the stick to the map and marks it unchecked. He does not wipe it here. Wiping would destroy whatever is on it before the rules have been applied to it.
18.2 Worked example
Lesson table; scroll horizontally to read all columns →
| Claim about the stick | Scope it assumes | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "The spreadsheet deletion covers it." | One finished file | The deletion stays finished and does not cover the stick |
| "It must be the event photos." | A guess about contents | Do not assume that |
| Add it to the map as unchecked | A place not yet looked at | Accept |
| Wipe it this afternoon | Destruction before a check | Refuse |
Synthetic case. The stick's contents are not described. Do not invent files on it.
Errors and limits
Adding the stick does not say it is harmless, and it does not say it holds customer data. Both would be guesses. A later look, if Mrs. Adeyemi asks for one, is a new notebook line. This lesson does not perform that look.
Apply
- EX072 — Which deletion is finished? The laptop spreadsheet is already deleted. A USB stick is found and is not on the map. A colleague says the spreadsheet deletion covers the stick, or that it must be photos and should be wiped. What stays finished, and what is added?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = the spreadsheet deletion stays finished and does not cover the stick; add the stick to the map as unchecked; do not wipe it;; 2 = the deletion does not cover the stick, and the stick is not wiped;; 1 = one of those;; 0 = none.
