+-- no money figure is invented

Learning outcomes

After this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Leave a bare shop total outside personal data.
  2. Classify the same total as personal once a receipt or loyalty number is attached.
  3. Keep that number from being called health data when no condition is stated.

17.1 The staple is the change. The coins are not.

Chapter 1 used Tuesday's total takings, with no receipt attached, as a shop figure rather than a customer record. A colleague staples a receipt to the same total, or writes loyalty number 44021 beside it, and says it is "still only takings". The attachment is what Chapter 1's link test asks about. Juniper can tie 44021 to one customer, so the stapled page is personal data even though the coins were not. Points on that number still do not state an illness, so the health answer does not flip unless a medicine line is there. Sofia does not invent the amount. If she cannot tell whether a scribble links to a person, she treats the page as personal rather than calling the day's takings a customer record by habit.

17.2 Worked example

Lesson table; scroll horizontally to read all columns →

Page in her hand Personal data? Health data?
Tuesday's total, nothing attached No No
The same total plus a receipt Yes Only if the receipt states or reveals a condition
The same total plus 44021 and no medicine Yes No
"Write a sum so the example looks finished." Do not invent the sum Do not invent the sum

Synthetic case. No takings figure is added.

Errors and limits

Classifying the stapled page does not decide whether the till may keep it. Purpose, minimisation and retention are the next questions, and this chapter does not answer them for a new use.

Worked answers

EX071. The page becomes personal data because Juniper can link 44021 to one customer. The number does not state an illness, so it is not yet health data. The bare total, left bare, stays not personal.
