## Chapter 1 — Starting at Eastgate

### Learning outcomes

You will (1) describe the technologist route and its case; (2) explain the applied focus of the course; (3) set up a working environment.

### 1.1 The student

Ravi Desai starts a three-year technologist diploma in data management at the fictional Eastgate Institute of Technology. His instructor, Ms. Hannah Moreau, explains that the course prepares technologists who build and run the tools, checks and reports that make data governance work day to day. Throughout the course, Ravi works with a fictional partner organisation, Calder Valley Housing Association, which owns about nine thousand homes and handles around thirty thousand repair jobs a year. All data used in labs are synthetic. Ravi is keen.

### 1.2 Applied focus

Ms. Moreau explains the difference between this course and a degree. Ravi will spend most of his time doing: writing queries, scripts and validation checks, building dashboards, maintaining dictionaries and supporting stewards. Theory appears where it helps practice. Each chapter has a practical task linked to Calder Valley. She notes that technologists are often the people who notice data problems first, so they need enough governance understanding to raise them with the right people and explain their effects clearly. Ravi welcomes the practical emphasis.

### 1.3 Working environment

Ravi sets up his environment: a Python installation using only the standard library, a text editor, a small SQLite database of synthetic Calder Valley data and a version control repository for his scripts. Ms. Moreau insists that every script be saved in the repository with a short description. She explains that this habit matters in practice, where scripts written for one-off checks often become essential processes that nobody can find or explain after their author leaves. Ravi writes his first repository description that afternoon.

### 1.4 Calder Valley's needs

Calder Valley's data manager, a fictional figure named Mrs. Okonjo, meets the class. She explains that the association must report repair performance to its regulator, respond to tenants' requests about their data and manage contractors who carry out most repairs. Data come from a housing management system, contractor portals and spreadsheets. She asks students to help with practical problems, starting with the quality of repair job records, which feed every performance report. The class agrees to begin with a survey of repair job fields and their uses.

### Worked example

Ravi begins the technologist diploma, learns its applied focus, sets up a standard-library Python environment with version control and meets Calder Valley's data manager, who describes repair reporting needs.

> **Synthetic case.** Eastgate, Calder Valley and all people are synthetic.

### Errors and limits

Scripts kept outside version control become unexplainable processes.

### Exercises

- **EX001 — Partner size.** How many homes does Calder Valley own? *Rubric:* 3 = about nine thousand;; 2 = partly correct;; 1 = wrong;; 0 = none.
- **EX002 — Technologist role.** What do technologists build and run? *Rubric:* 3 = tools, checks and reports for governance;; 2 = partly correct;; 1 = partial;; 0 = none.
- **EX003 — First problem.** Which problem does Mrs. Okonjo ask students to start with? *Rubric:* 3 = quality of repair job records;; 2 = partly correct;; 1 = other;; 0 = none.
