A softer adjective does not move a message out of the banned method.

no lures about money, food or personal hardship

+-- this lesson does not start a simulation
Learning outcomes
After this chapter, you should be able to:
- Keep the recommendation of no simulations for now.
- Recognise a surprise email as a simulation.
- Leave practice on announced role-play.
11.1 The manager's question was already answered
The charity manager asked whether Riverbend should send fake messages to test volunteers. Ruth's recommendation is no simulations for now, because deception can damage trust that volunteers can walk away from. After the trustees adopt the plan, a colleague proposes one "friendly surprise" about a missed shift, and says it is not really a simulation. A message people do not know is a test is the thing the scope excluded: a test that tricks people without agreement. Missed shifts sit next to the hardship themes that would be barred even if a programme were ever agreed. Ruth does not send it. Announced role-play remains the way to practise a procedure.
11.2 Worked example
Lesson table; scroll horizontally to read all columns →
| Proposal | What it actually is | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No simulations for now | The recommendation | Keep it |
| Announced role-play of the callback | The allowed practice | May go ahead as practice |
| A surprise email about a missed shift | An unannounced trick | Refuse |
| "We will only keep the totals, so it is fine." | A rule for a programme that is not agreed | Not a reason to start |
Synthetic case. No lure is sent. No volunteer is scored.
Errors and limits
Refusing the surprise does not forbid talking about tactics in a lesson people know they are attending. The difference is whether the person agreed to be tested.
Apply
- EX057 — What is the surprise? Ruth has recommended no simulations for now. A colleague wants one friendly surprise email about a missed shift, with only totals kept. What do you refuse, and what practice remains allowed?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = refuse the surprise; it is a trick without agreement; no simulations for now still stands; announced role-play remains the practice; do not send the message;; 2 = the surprise is refused;; 1 = one of those;; 0 = none.
