## Chapter 8 — An unsubscribe is a new line

<!-- open-cyber-academy:lesson-figures:start ch-08 -->
### Lesson map

Lesson 08 published. Map, example, EX062.

```mermaid
flowchart TD
  U["A person among the five asks to stop"] --> D["Delete the address soon after, and date it"]
  D --> S["Do not rerun the twelve-row script to print 4"]
  S --> K["The published five remains the description of that file"]
```

The keeping rule and the lab file are different objects.

### Logical drawing

```text
rule: newsletter address kept while subscribed
    deleted soon after unsubscribe
synthetic file: five addresses with tick yes
a later stop request from one of those addresses
    |
    +-- the request is a new event
    +-- the script is not edited, and 5 is not rewritten as 4
    +-- the notebook dates the deletion
```

### Learning outcomes

After this chapter, you should be able to:

1. Apply the unsubscribe rule to one address without touching the published lab print.
2. Refuse to treat "5 minus 1" as a new measured send list.
3. Date the deletion in the notebook.

### 8.1 The five describe a file. A stop request describes a person.

The lab print says five unique valid addresses have a `yes` tick on that synthetic file. The keeping rule says an address stays while the person is subscribed and is deleted soon after they unsubscribe. Those sentences can both be true. If one of the five later asks to stop, Kwame deletes that address from the working send list and writes the date. He does not open `lab_signups.py` and change the file so the historic print says 4. The historic print still describes the file he ran. The deletion describes what happened after.

### 8.2 Worked example

| Proposal | Object it changes | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Delete the address and date the notebook | The working list, after a real stop request | Accept |
| Change the script's print from 5 to 4 | The record of the old file | Refuse |
| Keep emailing because the lab once counted them | A file that did not contain this stop request | Refuse |
| Wait until next year's review | The rule says soon after | Delete, and date it |

> **Synthetic case.** No new address is added to the twelve-row file. Do not invent which of the five unsubscribed.

### Errors and limits

Deleting one address does not answer whether the other four still have a `yes` on a later sheet. A later sheet is a later check. This is not a statement of what the GDPR requires in every organisation.

### Apply

- **EX062 — Five, or four?** One address from the send list unsubscribes. A colleague edits the lab note so it reads "unique valid addresses with a yes tick: 4". What is deleted, what is dated, and what print stays? *Rubric:* 3 = delete the address from the working list and date the notebook; leave the published print at 5; do not edit the script to force 4;; 2 = delete and keep the published 5;; 1 = one of those;; 0 = none.
