Learning outcomes
You will (1) write a bachelor's thesis on a governance improvement; (2) present to academic and practitioner audiences; (3) reflect on learning.
40.1 The thesis
Sofia writes her thesis on improving access review in a small social landlord. It covers the problem, literature and standards, her interview study, the redesign, implementation, evaluation and conclusions. She cites ISO/IEC 27002:2022 on access rights, NIST CSF 2.0 and the research on user participation by Spears and Barki (2010). Each claim links to evidence, and limitations are stated plainly. Appendices hold the interview guide, codebook, role guide and measurement definitions. Placing the measurement definitions in an appendix lets a reader repeat her completion and removal counts.
40.2 Presentations
Sofia presents twice. To examiners at Brightwater she focuses on methods, evidence and limits. To Elmfield's board she focuses on what changed, what it cost and what the board should decide. Examiners ask how she avoided bias given her placement role; she explains her reflexive notes and the second coder. The board asks whether the approach could work for repairs contractors; she suggests a pilot. Both audiences value clear evidence presented in their own terms. Her answer about the second coder points back to the reliability check in chapter 33.
40.3 Reflection
Sofia reflects on her four years. She began counting laptops and ended redesigning a governance process with evidence. She learned that governance is mainly about people, clarity and follow-through, supported by data and standards. She also learned to state limits honestly and to give credit to the managers whose interviews shaped her work. Dr. Haddad notes that her habits of precise claims and fair evidence will serve her in any GRC role. Her claim in chapter 1 about two hundred and seventy of three hundred accounts is an early example of the same habits.
Worked example
Sofia writes and presents her thesis to two audiences, answers questions on bias and reflects on her learning.
Synthetic case. The thesis is synthetic; cited sources are real.
Errors and limits
Reflection can be selective. One organisation limits generality.
Exercises
- EX118 — Thesis sources. Which research paper on participation does Sofia cite?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = Spears and Barki (2010);; 2 = Spears;; 1 = vague;; 0 = none. - EX119 — Bias answer. How did Sofia answer the examiners on bias?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = reflexive notes and a second coder;; 2 = reflexivity;; 1 = vague;; 0 = none. - EX120 — Board suggestion. What did Sofia suggest for repairs contractors?
Show marking criteria
Rubric: 3 = a pilot of the approach;; 2 = pilot;; 1 = vague;; 0 = none.
Synthesis
A bachelor's thesis joins research, practice and honest limits into usable governance knowledge.
