Learning outcomes

You will (1) write a bachelor's thesis on applied data protection; (2) present findings to an audience; (3) reflect on learning.

40.1 Thesis

Elena writes her thesis on improving data protection in a primary school trust. It covers the app register, vetting, consent checking, disclosure control, failure analysis, the parent portal and its evaluation. Each chapter presents evidence and limits. She argues that most risks in the trust came from ordinary processes, such as email and apps, and that practical controls combined with honest measurement reduced them. Her thesis follows one trust. It uses evidence from each placement chapter. Measurement anchors every claim made.

40.2 Presentation

Elena presents to a panel of tutors and the trust's data protection lead. She uses figures from her labs: apps without agreements, vetting scores, suppressed cells, photographs held and portal results. Questions focus on sustainability: who will maintain the register and portal? She answers with the owners and calendar established in operations. The panel asks about children's voices, and she describes asking older pupils about photographs. Her slides use evidence tables. Each claim cites a lab result. Governors attend the session.

40.3 Assessment

The panel commends the thesis for linking evidence to action and for honesty about shortfalls. They suggest that future work could involve pupils more directly in designing privacy information. Elena agrees and notes it as a recommendation. Dr. Asante notes that the thesis shows a full cycle from problem to evaluated improvement. The panel suggests involving pupils earlier in design decisions, such as asking them how the portal should present their own reports and photographs. She accepts this. The panel passes her thesis.

40.4 Reflection

Elena reflects on four years. She learned that privacy protects real people, here children who cannot easily protect themselves. She learned that law, technology and people must work together. She learned to measure and report honestly. She plans to work in data protection for schools and to keep studying children's rights. The trust offers her a part-time role as a privacy officer, which she accepts. She remains grateful to Dr. Asante. She thanks the teachers. She starts the role in September.

Worked example

Elena writes a thesis linking evidence to action, presents lab figures and sustainability plans, receives commendation and a suggestion to involve pupils, and reflects on protecting children.

Synthetic case. The thesis and job offer are synthetic.

Errors and limits

A single trust's experience may not generalise; state context clearly.
