Learning outcomes

You will (1) work with education, safeguarding and legal professionals; (2) translate between disciplines; (3) resolve conflicts between professional goals.

32.1 Working with educators

Teachers want tools that help children learn. Elena learns to frame privacy as part of good teaching: an app that profiles children for advertising undermines the trust between school and family. She works with a curriculum lead to include privacy questions in the process for choosing resources. Translating privacy into educational language, she finds, gains more support than presenting it as a legal requirement imposed from outside. Teachers respond to classroom examples such as a reading app. They want examples, not rules.

32.2 Working with safeguarding

Safeguarding leads must share information to protect children, sometimes quickly. Elena learns that data protection law does not prevent sharing to protect a child at risk, and that fear of breaking privacy rules should never delay necessary safeguarding. She helps write guidance stating that safeguarding information may be shared when needed to protect a child, recorded afterwards, and limited to what is necessary. The guidance reduces hesitation without abandoning care. Staff now share concerns faster. Clear guidance on lawful sharing gives staff confidence to act.

32.3 Working with lawyers

The trust's legal adviser interprets law; Elena explains systems. In a discussion about retention, the adviser explains statutory periods and Elena explains which systems can enforce them automatically. Together they produce a retention schedule that is both lawful and implementable. She learns that lawyers and technologists each have half of the answer, and that projects go wrong when either side assumes the other has handled their part. The lawyer drafts terms while Elena checks the technical facts behind them. Both review drafts.

32.4 Resolving conflicts

Conflicts arise. The curriculum lead wants learning analytics that track every click; Elena prefers coarse data. They agree on weekly summaries per pupil, kept for the school year, which give teachers what they need without detailed tracking. Dr. Asante notes that interdisciplinary work succeeds when each side states its real goal rather than its preferred solution, because goals can often be met in more than one way. Stating goals first turned a stalemate about a homework app into a shared solution.

Worked example

Elena frames privacy in educational terms, writes guidance that safeguarding sharing must not be delayed by privacy fears, co-designs an implementable retention schedule with the legal adviser and negotiates weekly analytics summaries.

Synthetic case. Colleagues and decisions are synthetic.

Errors and limits

Translating across disciplines can oversimplify; check meanings with each professional.

Exercises

Synthesis

Chapter 32 works across disciplines. Chapter 33 advances research methods.
