Learning outcomes

You will (1) write the bachelor's thesis; (2) present to examiners and partners; (3) reflect on learning.

40.1 Structuring the thesis

Priya's thesis follows the project: problem and context, background and sources, requirements and threat analysis, design and option comparison, lab testing, deployment, evaluation and conclusions. Each chapter begins with its purpose and ends with what the next chapter uses. Claims are linked to evidence in appendices: test tables, measurement data and decision records. She keeps the main text to about forty pages, moving detailed configuration listings to appendices in sanitised form. Dr Kowal reviews two drafts, asking each time for clearer links between claims and evidence, and for limitations to be stated beside results.

40.2 Sanitising and approval

Before submission, Priya replaces real device names, addresses and staff names with synthetic ones, and removes any detail that could help an attacker, such as exact firewall models or passphrase policies. The clinic IT lead and data protection officer review the thesis and approve it in writing. This protects the clinics and also protects Priya, who can show the thesis to future employers without worrying about disclosing a partner's sensitive information. The approval letter is included in the appendices with its date, so examiners can see that the release was authorised.

40.3 Presenting

Priya presents twice: to examiners, focusing on method, evidence and limitations; and to clinic managers, focusing on outcomes, costs and next steps. Examiners ask why she did not use a cloud-delivered option, and she explains the comparison and sensitivity results. Managers ask whether the remaining clinics can be done without her, and she shows the documentation and the IT lead's role in both deployments. Adapting the same work to different audiences is the skill practised in chapter 32. Both talks are rehearsed in advance.

40.4 Reflection

In her reflection, Priya notes that the technical work was the easier part. Understanding clinical priorities, agreeing access with suppliers, sanitising data and earning the trust of a busy IT lead took more time and taught her more. She would start the inventory comparison earlier and involve clinical staff sooner. Her degree ends with a deployed design, evidence of improvement and a clinic team able to continue the work, which is the outcome a bachelor's capstone should aim for. She records these lessons for future students.

Worked example

The thesis is submitted with approved sanitised appendices and passes with recommendations for publication as a case study.

Synthetic case. The thesis is synthetic.

Errors and limits

Theses that hide limitations invite harder questioning than those that state them clearly.

Exercises

Synthesis

The bachelor's route ends with a deployed, evidenced design and the professional skills to deliver it.
